This is your weekly reminder that the Russian Culture Society will be meeting this Friday to talk about many things, but our primary subject matter will be regarding Dating in Russian Culture. We will have a handout of relevant verbs, vocab, and phrases to help you spit game once you travel to Russia. Maybe we’ll have some aphrodisiacs available too. We also discussed a few dates last so please check the schedule below to pick up anything you missed.

The Multicultural Karaoke and Halloween party is next week, so we ask that members find a song or two that they would like the group to sing (together). RCS has always been a fun participant and we hope to continue that this year. There will also be a prize for best costume, so intend on joining everyone that night!

Russia Opens Cultural Center in Paris
Russia’s culture minister replaced President Putin as the guest of honor at the opening ceremony of a Russian spiritual and cultural center in Paris. Construction on the center, which is legally part of the Russian embassy in France, with all corresponding immunities, began in 2013 and cost about €90 million to complete.

Soyuz spacecraft with 3-man crew blasts off to Intl Space Station
A Soyuz MS-02 has taken off from the Baikonur cosmodrome, taking two Russian cosmonauts and a US astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS).The crew includes Sergey Ryzhikovand and Andrey Borisenko, as well as NASA’s Robert Shane Kimbrough.The Soyuz reached orbit just nine minutes into the flight, while the ship’s journey to the International Space Station (ISS) is expected to take two days.The new two-day flight plan aims at testing all systems of the new space craft, according to Russia’s space agency Roscosmos.

The KGB disappears
On October 23, 1991 the Committee for State Security, known as KGB, was officially abolished. It had been created in 1954. Although its budget and staff have always been classified information, it is estimated that at the time of its greatest activity 480,000 people worked for the KGB.

Венера- 4
On October 18, 1964 the Venera 4 (Венера, Russian for Venus) spacecraft successfully landed on the surface of Venus, becoming the first man-made object to reach another planet. The spacecraft landed severely damaged due to the pressure of the atmosphere of the planet.
